Las Vegas Pool Safety Guide: Summer 2025 Awareness & Resources

As summer temperatures soar in the Las Vegas Valley, pool season is in full swing. While swimming is one of the best ways to cool down and connect with family and friends, it also comes with responsibility. Nevada’s dry heat and abundance of backyard pools make water safety a year-round priority—especially for households with children.
Whether you’re a new pool owner, a longtime resident, or a parent preparing for your child’s first swim lesson, this guide highlights top safety tips and trusted local programs to help keep everyone safe in and around the water.
Safety Barriers & Local Codes
Clark County (and Las Vegas) requires strong perimeter fences and additional barriers:
- Perimeter Fence: Minimum 60 inches tall, non-climbable, four-sided, with gates that self-close, latch above a child’s reach, and swing away from the pool. Isolation fences (between pool and home) must be at least 48 inches tall
- Gates: Must be self-closing and self-latching, never propped open.
- Gap Rules: No gaps wider than 4 inches; no footholds/handholds within reach.
- Extras: Doggy doors should be secured/alarmed; alarmed doors and windows alert when leading to pool area; pool covers should support adult weight and be locked when not in use clarkcountynv.gov.
These requirements align with the 2018 International Swimming Pool & Spa Code and Clark County’s amendments .
For new residential pools, homeowners must submit building and fence permits, plot plans, structural, electrical, and plumbing details to Clark County’s Building & Fire Prevention Department

Swim Safety Tips for Every Household
- Enroll in swim lessons early. Children as young as six months can begin age-appropriate water exposure with qualified instructors.
- Designate a “Water Watcher.” Always assign a focused adult to monitor swimming—distracted supervision is one of the most common risk factors.
- Secure your pool area. Install four-sided fencing, self-latching gates, and pool alarms. Safety barriers are your first line of defense.
- Avoid relying on floaties. While they may help kids feel comfortable, they don’t replace formal instruction or supervision.
- Keep safety gear close. Rescue rings, life jackets, and a phone for emergencies should always be nearby.
- Learn CPR. Quick action can save lives—consider getting certified through the American Red Cross or a local provider.
Community Awareness & Resources
- Clark County Free Swim Lessons
In partnership with Southern Nevada Health District and SNICC, Clark County offers complimentary swim lessons for children under age 4. Classes are held at participating community centers.
- National Water Safety Month (May) & Drowning Prevention Month (June)
Local pools and organizations often offer free safety demos, lifejacket fittings, and water safety education throughout these months.
A Few Extra Reminders
- Even strong swimmers need supervision.
- Don’t underestimate the importance of water acclimation for babies and toddlers.
- If you own a pool, make sure it meets Clark County safety codes.
- Educate all caregivers on your household’s pool rules and emergency plans.
